Introduction

Background

This report presents statistics on the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the population in mid-2017 at the District Council (DC) district level. These statistics are primarily computed based on data collected in the General Household Survey (GHS) in January to December 2017 and the 2017 mid-year population estimates by age and sex in each DC district as control totals.

The Central and Western District Council is the district council for the Central and Western District in Hong Kong. Central and Western District currently consists of 15 members, of which the district is divided into 15 constituencies, electing a total of 15 members. Yau Tsim Mong District Council is the district council for the Yau Tsim Mong District in Hong Kong. It is one of 18 district council. Yau Tsim Mong District currently consists of 19 members, of which the district is divided into 19 constituencies, electing a total of 19 members. It was merged from the Mong Kok District Board and Yau Tsim District Board in 1994 due to the significant drop of the population in the districts. The latest election was held on 22 November 2015.

General Household Survey

The GHS is based on a sample of quarters selected from all permanent quarters and quarters in segments which are for residential purpose in Hong Kong in accordance with a scientifically designed sampling scheme. The sampling units are:

(a) permanent quarters in built-up areas(including urban areas, new towns and major developments); and

(b) segments in non-built-up areas (i.e. each containing about 10 quarters on average).

Data information

Detailed information on the labour force characteristics of the population for Hong Kong as awhole is published in the Quarterly Report on General Household Survey. The present report contains statistics pertaining to a broad range of the population and household characteristics in each DC district.
